First up, let’s get the awkwardness out of the way…how on earth do you pronounce his name? Maciek is pronounced ‘Ma-chek’. If you need help remembering, just think, ‘waiter, can I have ma check!’
If you want to sound French, fancy and incorrect, you can call him ‘Marshay’ or ‘Maycheck’ or even ‘Mayciek’. Truth be told, he’ll answer to almost anything as that is what you do when you have a Polish name and a sense of humour.
But Maciek is more than just a fancy name. He has been working in the Vocational Training sector for 23 years and as a consultant for over 17 of those years focusing on the development of training within the Australian Vocational Education and Training (VET) industry.
Maciek commenced his VET journey in 1999 when, after graduating university, he, like many folk in their early twenties, decided to quit his job and work for himself. Although, unlike many folk in their early twenties, this business was an RTO specialising in beauty services and he ran it with his amazing and talented mother. With this unexpected beginning, a successful career was born!
In 2006, Maciek branched out into freelance consultancy. He saw the need to empower RTOs to not just be compliant but to truly understand how their business works so that they have the skills to scale by creating better practices.
Maciek is highly respected in the VET sector and over the years has been a regular speaker at conferences, contributed to industry magazines, employed over 13 staff, managed his own consulting company, as well as niche RTOs. He has a working knowledge of the hassles that come with the RTO territory and believes in learning from the experience of others; especially the mistakes. With Maciek, there is no time wasted with faking perfection. Ask him about his mistakes…he will tell you!
Currently, he is the Director of RTO Coaching and Consultancy Pty Ltd which provides coaching, mentoring and consultancy services as well as professional development and operational support to training organisations across Australia.
He works with a range of clients and focuses on quality, not just compliance. Maciek believes that compliance must be an organisation-wide responsibility and that a culture of quality, reinforced with ongoing education, shared responsibility and accountability, will ensure that compliance is naturally met. Maciek helps RTOs to focus on delivering quality outcomes rather than constantly worrying about the next audit.
He has seen the industry morph many times over the years. While he has enjoyed the many challenges faced due to the never-ending changes, he has never lost sight of the industry’s main focus – to educate our students and provide better opportunities to our graduates. It is this breadth of experience that he brings to his clients.
Maciek holds a Bachelor of Applied Science and various vocational qualifications including the Diploma of Quality Auditing, Diploma of Training and Assessment, and Certificate IV in Business Management.
On a personal level, Maciek has been involved with community groups since migrating to Australia in 1981. He believes in living life to the fullest and giving back. He has served in the QLD SES Fire and Rescue NSW and as Senior Deputy within the NSW Rural Fire Service, been involved with the sport of volleyball both nationally and internationally as a player, coach and referee and received the Gold Cross of Merit from the Polish President for his services to the Polish Community in Australia, and most recently the National Emergency Medal for his work during the ‘Black Summer’ bushfires of 2019/20.
On a deeper level, Maciek has done many wonderful and weird things in his life… One favourite memory was performing at the opening ceremony of the 2000 Sydney Olympics as Nikki Webster’s understudy…just kidding, he was part of a Polish Folk Ensemble but if he’d been given the chance he definitely would have donned the pink dress and been hoisted into the air!
Aside from his work in the community and with RTOs, Maciek is also a beekeeper with an establishing apiary, Mangrove Mountain Harvest. He is passionate about developing sustainable practices, sharing the benefits of beekeeping and promoting the health benefits of honey.
Maciek cares about people and helping them smash their goals. Now that you have a snapshot of his story and know how to pronounce his name, get in touch!
